Biography

Michael Bloomberg is an American businessman, author, politician, and philanthropist. He is the founder, CEO, and owner of Bloomberg L.P., a global financial services, mass media, and software company. He began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers, before forming his own company in 1981 and spending the next twenty years as its chairman and CEO. Bloomberg served as the 108th Mayor of New York City, holding office for three consecutive terms, beginning with his first election in 2001. As chair of the C40 Climate Leadership Group from 2010 to 2013, Bloomberg drew international attention to cities’ leading role in the fight against climate change. In 2014, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed him to be U.N. Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change. In 2016, he accepted World Health Organization director-general Margaret Chan’s invitation to serve as the WHO global ambassador for no communicable diseases as part of the WHO’s push to achieve UN goals of reducing premature NCD deaths by one-third by 2030.
